The Spring Equinox has come and gone, and though it is decidedly wintry as I write this, just last week it was 100F in the hoop houses! In the seedling trailer, newly sprouted storage onions, cabbage, and lettuces are bringing us joy and hope on these gray spring days. We can’t wait to have you all join us in tending to them as they grow! We have seeded salad radishes and turnips and some sugar snap peas in one of our hoop houses and tucked them in under frost cover for some extra warmth on these early spring days.

We are delighted to welcome Meghan Hurley as our newest Farm Hand! She’s excited to deepen her knowledge of climate friendly and soil regenerative farming practices this season and will be taking on the bulk of our soil building and amending work. Her favorite vegetable is sweet potato, which she loves to cube, season with herbs, and air fry – yum! She lives in Portland with her boyfriend and quirky dog and looks forward to meeting more of you as the season warms up.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out for our well-attended and cozy Paper Pot making party this weekend! It was wonderful to see some of you again and meet many of you for the first time. Over good conversation and snacks, we estimate that we made about 2,500 paper pots! We’ll use these to give our tomato, pepper, eggplant, cucumber, and squash seedlings more room once they outgrow the small soil blocks that we start them in. These tender annual crops spend a lot of time growing in the protected warmth of the hoop house before it’s warm enough in our chilly northern zone (5b) to allow for outdoor planting.
With care,
Lindsay Wasko
Farm Director
