Happy February to you all!
I feel like I blinked and all of a sudden we’re midway through winter. Though the farm is nestled snugly under a blanket of snow, all of us at G2G have been busy preparing for the year to come. As the brand new Farm Director, I’ve been spending a lot of my winter familiarizing myself with the farm, getting to know our board, and getting introduced to our wonderful community partners through Theda. Of course, I have also been crop planning (we’re growing a few new crops for our New Mainer community, including Roselle Hibiscus!) and working on hiring for the upcoming season.
We were also able to sneak in a few wintry harvests due to those balmy stretches of weather in late fall that allowed some of our hearty greens to put on some new growth before the temperatures dropped! Theda and I were joined by some brave volunteers to harvest hearty collards, tender Swiss chard, and even frost-sweetened spinach. There’s something really special about opening up the hoop houses on a sub-zero winter day and being able to take off your mittens to harvest!
Though the wind blows and the snow is piling up, we are working on digging out a few of our hoop houses to sow seeds for our early spring radishes, turnips, and maybe some hearty greens. Believe it or not, it’s not too early! Seeds have their own deep wisdom, and they’ll remain dormant under the soil until it’s warm enough for them to germinate. With the protection of the hoop house, those hearty veggies might be sprouting before the snows melt!
I’m hoping to start seedlings in March, so stay tuned for a call for seedling volunteers! Other opportunities we have coming up include our annual paper pot making party and spring elderberry pruning (see details below).
Though I was lucky enough to meet many of you this fall, I look forward to reconnecting and meeting the rest of you in the coming months!
With care,
Lindsay Wasko
