Two kinds of friends

Farm Report 5/16/23

This was the week that we had booked to start the construction of our Farmer’s Friend replacement grow tunnels.

With the help of many other friends, the first step was completed. Many, many thanks go to John Newlin who organized and led this very successful project. Thanks go to our Fixer friends–Bob, Burnham, John Hayes, and Tom–who guided and instructed our other volunteers. Lee and David–you guys were awesome.  I was so happy to see you both smiling as you left. Denise and David–you are always there when we need extra help. Thank you! Our Farm Skills team–Leah, Dylan, Max, Jasmine, Sivi, and Kate–all seemed to enjoy being part of such an effort, learning new tool skills along the way. Thanks, team!

We had other volunteers on Saturday who Carol kept busy with planting tasks. Thanks go to Carol, Katy, Andrew, Mila, and Amanda, for planting more onions and flowers.

I started with our biggest achievement of the week, but there was also a lot more accomplished on other days, too.

We harvested and donated the first of our rhubarb.

We brought the dahlia bulbs up and out of the basement where they were being stored. Carol started to divide them and pot up the ones that are sprouting.

The Wednesday Farm Skills team, with volunteer help, prepped a bed so that it would be ready for our 4th graders to plant with Long Island Pie Pumpkins.

Sivi happily learned how to mow with our electric mower.

On Thursday, the MCW 4th graders planted a whole plot of pumpkins and also got flats started with basil and flowers.

Our Morse High School friends did some heavy mulching, edging, and weeding work on Friday.

Doug has been coming over and mowing like crazy. We know it’s “No Mow May”, but we have to be able to control the ticks, and we all know ticks love tall grass. Here is a lovely photo of an attempt to be a bit “no mow”.

So now I circle back to the beginning of this farm report–friends. G2G has so many friends and supporters, from all over the world, believe it or not! Some volunteers support us by being at the farm and others through donations. Some of our volunteers have family living in other parts of the world who follow and support our progress and others by just being out there rooting for us! We appreciate all of you!

So my usual ending of feeling grateful is  x 10 this week!

Always grateful, x 10
