BUGS! Our days begin with what we call bug patrol. Trying to rid our plants of cucumber beetles and various beetles is a daily activity. We have found that a very long pair of tweezers to get into the bright yellow blossoms and rid them of the cucumber beetles work best. Making duct tape bracelets is a great way to collect the amber eggs of squash beetles and the newly hatched nymphs.  A bucket of soapy water to drop those Japanese beetles into is our method of elimination. I was hoping that all our interplanting and companion planting would make such an impact on these unwanted pests we would not be in a battle with them. I am sure there must be effects that we can’t measure, and who knows, maybe the unwanted bugs would be much more prevalent. Enough about bugs!
Because of our intensive interplanting, starting the next crop is a weekly activity. More lettuce, cucumbers, spinach and fall broccoli are all in the seedling houses. Here is Carol transplanting broccoli that will follow the garlic when it is harvested in a couple of weeks. Someone remarked that Carol has planted or transplanted the bulk of our seedlings. It’s true, Carol joined us in the greenhouse in early Spring helping with those spring seedlings and all those seedling sale plants. Thank you Carol, for being someone we can rely on and being an ambassador for G2G.
Our Friday lunch/potluck this week had a theme, it was pie. This break in our week has brought about lots of interesting conversations and forged new friendships, not to mention the sharing of lots of good food! Here are Ollie, Tucker and Paul showing off their creations of fruit pies.
“Pick a bouquet and donate today” is officially open. We had a family of three generations come out and create a lovely bouquet. Thank you ladies! There are flowers everywhere and so are the pollinators!
Donation boxes are currently full of cabbages, scallions, summer squash, chard, cukes, turnips and herbs. Soon we will be able to add tomatoes and peppers, the taste of summer.
Another productive week at the farm. Thanks to all who come and give us a hand with our daily tasks. It really makes the farm run smoothly and efficiently. We get so many compliments and it is all because of all of you. Thanks from all of us.
