Executive Director

Growing to Give is a dynamic non-profit, MOFGA-certified organic farm in Brunswick, Maine, working with volunteers to grow vegetables for people facing food insecurity. We model, teach and promote climate-friendly farming practices. Since 2017, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, we have grown and harvested nearly 120,000 lbs of organic vegetables (equivalent to nearly 100,000 meals) that have been donated to over 30 food access sites in seven Maine counties.
Growing to Give is seeking its first paid full-time Executive Director as the organization transitions to a new leadership structure. The Executive Director will serve as the chief executive officer of Growing to Give, working in partnership with the Board of Directors to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight. This collaborative leader will drive the organization’s mission forward through effective financial management, fundraising excellence, program development, and community engagement while fostering sustainable growth and impact.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Board Relations
- Develop, implement, execute, and evaluate the organization’s strategic plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors
- Provide leadership in setting organizational priorities and long-term vision
- Serve as primary liaison to the Board, preparing for and attending board meetings
- Support board development, governance, and recruitment efforts
- Ensure organizational compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
Financial Management & Operations
- Develop, manage, and oversee annual budget (currently at ~$300,000), projecting expenditures and managing financial goals
- Employ knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, reporting, legal compliance, and grant management
- Oversee infrastructure development, staffing needs, and program budget allocation
- Work closely with Finance Committee to ensure fiscal responsibility and sustainability
- Ensure accurate maintenance of donor database and financial reporting
Fundraising & Development
- Lead a comprehensive fundraising strategy including individual donors, foundations, corporate partnerships, and special events
- Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors and funding partners
- Lead grant acquisition through grant writing, applications, and compliance reporting, or oversee delegation of these responsibilities
- Work with Development Committee to plan and execute annual fundraising goals
- Represent the organization at community events and with potential funders
Program Leadership & Community Engagement
- Serve as the primary public representative and spokesperson for the organization, building strategic relationships with key stakeholders, partners, funders, and community leaders while effectively communicating the organization’s mission, vision, and impact to diverse audiences.
- Work collaboratively with the Farm Director to ensure program excellence and mission alignment
- Oversee volunteer engagement strategies and community outreach initiatives
- Ensure consistent branding and messaging across all communications
Staff Management
- Provide leadership to staff in a supportive, collaborative environment. Current staffing includes four year-round employees (FT and PT) and variable seasonal PT employees.
- Foster a positive organizational culture that honors diverse perspectives and promotes teamwork
- Plan regular staff meetings to discuss goals, track progress, and address operational needs
- Support professional development and capacity building for team members
Qualifications:
- Deep commitment to Growing to Give’s mission of food security, sustainable agriculture, and community building while sustaining climate-friendly practices
- Minimum 5-7 years of senior management experience in the nonprofit sector, or equivalent progressive nonprofit experience demonstrating increasing leadership responsibilities, preferably in food security, agriculture, or environmental organizations
- Proven track record in fundraising and development with demonstrated success in donor cultivation and retention
- Collaborative and inclusive leadership style that inspires and motivates diverse teams
- Strong understanding of nonprofit financial management, budgeting, and grant compliance
- Ability to balance immediate operational needs with long-term organizational development
- Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities for diverse audiences
- Comfort with technology and ability to quickly learn new software platforms and digital tools and train others.
- Experience with Google Suite, QuickBooks Online, and donor management systems (Little Green Light or similar CRM platforms)
- Must have access to personal computer and reliable internet
