Farm Report 10/17/23 – Is it really mid-October?
Leaves are turning, temperatures are falling, but we still have not had a killing frost.
Vegetables, herbs, and flowers, that we would have had to give up on last year at this time, are still being harvested and sent out to our recipients, I am not complaining! Peppers, eggplant, zucchini, and a picking of our Fall spinach crop went out with this week’s gleanings.
The Waldorf 3rd graders came and harvested our bumper sweet potato crop. Best year ever! Harvesting the potatoes is always like going on a treasure hunt. The kids were super excited to find the biggest or craziest shape. Thanks to the 3rd graders–that was a big help!
Because we still have so many beautiful flowers, our 5th grade Waldorf friends came to pick and create beautiful arrangements to take home or give away. Everyone got into it, and here are some lovely examples. It was a nice diversion from all the hard physical tasks we have given them over the course of this season.
A group of Morse High School freshmen came to help us on Friday. They finished interplanting winter rye with chard for next Spring. This has been an ongoing project for the last couple of weeks that we just couldn’t seem to complete. Thanks for the help, Morse freshmen–another task that gets a check on our white board.
Also on Friday, the Fixers were starting to drain our irrigation pipes, and Denise and David helped finish the wreath boards for our upcoming Wreath Making Workshop.
Wreath Making Workshop?! Did I get your attention?
Let me give you the details:
Saturday, October 21st, 9-10:30 (approximately) in the seedling greenhouse.
Rain is in the forecast (should I really believe them?). No matter–we will be under cover.
Dress warmly and bring a hot beverage to wrap your hands around!
I will have 12 boards, so we will probably have to share. That’s okay because these wreaths are very quick to construct. I will have fresh plant material to work with, but feel free to bring anything you may want to collect from your own gardens or woodlands.
The workshop is free–an end-of-the-season thank you from me!
Always grateful,
Theda
