Color has arrived at the farm! It is in the form of daffodils, and they fill that craving we have for something bright and cheerful. Daffodils never disappoint.

Genevieve picked some for her grandmother’s birthday. Carrie and Sara picked some to enjoy. Do you know someone who would enjoy a bright bouquet of sunshine? We have plenty to share. Come pick a bouquet and donate today or just pick a bouquet to brighten someone’s day.

Our 2024 farm crew is coming together. Genevieve, Carol, and I will be running the farm, Carrie will pop in when she can, and Martha will be our new Education Coordinator. We also have Tim, Gabrielle, Margaret, and possibly Josie as summer interns. We are excited to have the seasoned staff joined by fresh eyes to share experiences, help problem-solve, and contribute to Friday potlucks!

I ordered 3,000 onions this year! These onion plants are donated through Maine’s Hunger for Harvest project. I picked them up Thursday afternoon, and we had 1,600 in the ground Friday by noon! We had some great help from Tim and Declan who did all the broadforking. Thanks, guys. Jennifer, Celeste, Monique, and Terry raked the fertilizer in, then helped plant three plants per hole 10” apart. These were covered to protect them from chilly nighttime temperatures and the constant wind we seem to get this time of year. The rain stopped us from continuing on Saturday, but we have a couple of school groups coming early next week to help finish up this project. It takes a village to plant so many onions. Onions are our #1 most requested crop. This variety happens to be Ailsa Craig. We will also plant bunching onions, leeks (my favorite), and scallions. Then there are chives and garlic chives (almost ready to harvest now). Chives always taste like Spring to me.

Our fabulous Fix-It Team was reunited on Friday with two new additions to the team, Craig Urquhart and Bob Black. Thanks to the entire team for getting our well up and running. Now we have hot water again! There was a really big list of seasonal projects and so much got accomplished. Thanks, team.

The Farm Skills Team came on Saturday, and it was fairly miserable outside with a constant drizzle. Luckily we have a protected work area and plenty of seeding/transplanting to keep everyone engaged.

G2G is looking for help on Wednesday, May 1st to help us reskin our Rimol greenhouse. A friend of the farm has offered to guide us through the process.

It will be an 8:00 AM start time–hopefully to beat the wind. It’s another “it takes a village project”:)

Thanks to all the volunteers who bundled up and came to help us this week and every week!

Always grateful,

Theda
